Influence of periodization in long-term sports preparation on dynamics of changes in punch force of a boxer

BACKGROUND: The aim of this work was to monitor the changes in punching force performance of a boxer in relationship to special training indicators during two subsequent annual training cycles ATC1, ATC2, and to subsequently determine, on the basis of time series correlation, the time shift in a delayed cumulative effect in long-term athletic training of a boxer.
METHODS: The paper is based on the intra-individual character. Using training logs, we have recorded special training indicators and periodization in the training cycles in accordance with the sports calendar. In regular 4-week long intervals, the monitored athlete participated in the force testing of basic boxing punches, from which the final average value was calculated. The test has been published by the AIBA world boxing association in the publication AIBA Coaches Manual (AIBA Coaches Commission, 2011). In time series correlation we used Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Statistical significance of relationships was assessed at 20% significance level.
RESULTS: The average punching force improved in ATC2 by 11 kg/cm², from value of 167.5 kg/cm² to value of 178.7 kg/cm². There have been statistically significant correlations with the general strength training means (GS) and also in the case of “sparring” training means (TT S). The delayed cumulative effect can be expected in the range of 2 to 4 weeks.
CONCLUSIONS: The best values in both ATCs were reached after mesocycles, when there was a sufficient amount of special strength, dynamics and explosive strength (SS, D, ES) and this period followed after the general strength training (GS).
