The correlation between serum level of pro b-type natriuretic peptide and severity of mitral valve stenosis as well as other related cardiac hemodynamic parameters

BACKGROUND: As we know, prognosis and severity of mitral valve disease are reflected in their NT-Pro-BNP. Therefore, in this study, we decided to investigate the relationship between severity of mitral valve stenosis and a number of cardiac hemodynamic parameters in order to use this marker with great certainty for diagnosis and prognosis of the patients with mitral valve problems.
METHODS: This study is a correlational study in which all patients with rheumatismal stenosis of mitral valve underwent echocardiography using last AHA/ASE guidelines and pro-Bnp assay regardless of their age. Then the data were analyzed statistically.
RESULTS: A total number of 61 patients with the mean age 46.7±12.37 (29.5% male) were included in the study. Finding showed no significant difference between Pro-BNP and MS (P=0.054), MR (P=0.775) and FC (P=0.217).
CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that Pro-BNP can be used as a factor to predict the diagnosis and prognosis of the patients, but further studies are recommended.
