AIM: This study tried to investigate the relationship between the genetic polymorphisms in the four candidate genes encoding for renin-angiotensin system and cardiac structure and function of athletes.
METHODS: Cardiac structure and function of the subjects was measured by echocardiography, and the genetic polymorphisms of four candidate genes (angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensinogen (AGT), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) and aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2)) encoding for renin-angiotensin system by SnaPshot method.
RESULTS: There were no significant diffrences in genotype and allele frequencies between controls and athletes, respectively. But, the M235T polymorphism in the AGT gene was significantly associated with the cardiac function such as resting heart rate (HRrest) and cardiac output (CO) in only control group, and the –344C/T polymorphism in the CYP11B2 gene with left ventricular internal dimension at end-systole (LVIDs) and resting heart rate (HRrest) value in only athletes, respectively (p<0.05).
CONCLUSION: These results from our data suggest that the inter-individual differences in cardiac adaptation of Korean athletes may be influenced by the genetic predisposition such as the –344C/T polymorphism of CYP11B2 gene.
