AIM: During last years the incidence of squam-ous cervical carcinoma is decreased, instead the incidence of adenocarcinoma is increased probably due to the limited effect of early diagnosis on the occurrence of the cancer of the endocervix. This study was carried out to evaluate the correlations between p16INK4A expression as an early biomarker of the endocervical adenocarcinoma and HPV infection.
METHODS: The analysis was performed on 13 endocervical samples. All of the 13 endocervical adenocarcinomas overexpressed p16INK4A and HPV DNA is present in 70% of the samples.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Our results confirm that p16INK4A is a early molecular biomarker that effectively could be used to discriminate adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix.
