Neurology Clinic of Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey
Aim: We aimed to update the epidemiologic characteristics and acute period prognoses of the patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke in our center.
Methods: A total of 500 patients, 252 females and 248 males, who were followed up in our center with the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke between September 2009 and July 2011 were included in the study retrospectively.
Results: 254 (50.8%) were admitted in the winter, 88 were admitted in the fall (17.6%), 85 (17%) in the spring and 73 (14.6%) in the summer. 219 (87.9%) of them were discharged from the hospital while 63 (12.1%) patients died.
Conclusion: Increased prevalence in ischemic stroke in the winter may warn the physicians for following up the patients more closely if they have the risk factors. Completely controllable risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia taking place on the top ranks indicates that social awareness is not still satisfactory, and new efforts must be undertaken on this issue.
