Acute pancreatitis and severe hypercalcemia due to milk-alkali syndrome

Department of Internal Medicine General Hospital of Karditsa, Karditsa, Greece
Milk-alkali syndrome (MAS) is a rare cause of acute pancreatitis. We report a case of a 49-year-old woman who developed MAS with severe hypercalcemia (total calcium 5.6 mmol/L) and acute pancreatitis. Conservative therapy was inefficient to reduce serum calcium and hemodialysis was performed. Despite treatment of acute pancreatitis the clinical condition was deteriorated and the patient was transferred to a gastrointestinal clinic. In conclusion, MAS may be a rare cause of severe acute pancrearitis.
