Potential novel preventive effect of taurine versus keloid formation

Keloids are benign dermal tumors that form due to dysregulation of wound healing after dermal injury with exuberant local fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. TGF-β, a potent profibrotic cytokine, plays an essential role in formation of keloids. Furthermore, activation of NF-κB pathway, by inducing the production of proinflammatory mediators such as IL-6 and NO and also by inhibiting the apoptosis of local fibroblasts, is considered to significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of keloid formation. Taurine is a semi-essential aminoacid with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. We suggest that by inhibiting the production of TGF-β and hampering the activation of NF-κB pathway, taurine may be a novel and effective treatment for prevention of keloid formation.
