Medicine in art: medical and artistical considerations on enema

Ceccarelli G.

L.D. in Puericoltura, Storico dell’Arte, Roma, Italia

PDF

We examined two paintings, one by Francisco Goya and the other by Eugenio Lucas Velasquez, related to enema, a practice very used in medicine until the last century. A short history of enema is remembered, from ancient Egypt to the citation that appears in the first edition of the famous Encyclopaedia Britannica. Then we studied briefly the two paintings, showing how sometimes the artistic interpretation goes well beyond the purely medical data.
