One of the most serious complications of a barium enema is perforation, which may be intraperitoneal or extaperitoneal. Potantional mechanisms of injury include trauma, overinflation of the balloon, recent instrumentation and associated disease of the rectum mucosa. Though, different kinds of complications have been described but any bladder perforation due to the retroperitoneal barium extravasation has not.
