Fibronectin immunoreactivity increases with fetal hepatic erythropoiesis progression in different stages of development

Background. The aim of ­this ­study was to de­ter­mine the ­role of fi­bro­nec­tin in fe­tal he­pat­ic eryth­ro­poiet­ic pro­life­ra­tion, and dif­fe­ren­ti­a­tion through­out de­vel­op­ment.
Methods. The pres­ence of the fi­bro­nec­tin, and gly­coph­or­in-C was in­ves­ti­gat­ed in a se­ries of fe­tal he­pat­ic spec­i­mens dur­ing the 1st, 2nd and ­3rd tri­mes­ter of ges­ta­tion.
Results. Fibronectin was strong­ly ex­pressed in the stro­mal ­cells of the he­pat­ic por­tal ­triads dur­ing the 2nd tri­mes­ter ­over the ­first (p<0.0001, “t”-­test) and ­3rd tri­mes­ters (p<0.0001, “t”-­test). Furthermore, an in­tense im­mu­nos­tain­ing for eryth­roc­y­tes (Glycophorin C) was ob­served in the 2nd tri­mes­ter ­over the ­first (p<0.0001, “t”-­test) and ­3rd tri­mes­ters (p<0.0001, “t”-­test).
Conclusions. On the ba­sis of ­these re­sults it is sug­gest­ed ­that fi­bro­nec­tin ­shows an eryth­roid ­growth-pro­mot­ing ac­tiv­ity dur­ing the 2nd tri­mes­ter of ges­ta­tion, prob­ably me­di­at­ed by the ­cell ad­he­sion do­main of the mole­cule.
