Cholera Outbreak in Merka district, Somalia, 1999
Beatini M., Cerri G., Grondona P., Manolitsi O.
Ospedale San Martino - Genova, Dipartimento di Chirurgia Generale e dei Trapianti d’organo
The diagnostic-therapeutic strategy adopted in the cholera outbreak during the first months of 1999 in the district of Merka in Somalia is described. Two hundred-seventysix patiens affected with watery diarrhea and vomiting were treated during the course of that epidemy with a CFR of 2.3%. It was confirmed that: with a well executed planning, during the pre epidemic phase, and the careful evaluation and correction of the state of dehydration during the full epidemic phase, a reduction of the CFR to numbers lower than 3% can be obtained also in developing countries.
