Evaluation of the skin benefits induced by a Centella-based supplement

In the skin, oxidation of lipids by ROS can damage cellular structures and induce premature cell death, as well as impaired skin properties. A highly-standardized extract of Centella asiatica (Centevita®) has shown marked antiaging efficacy through its action on ROS-induced oxidative stress and cytokine-induced skin inflammation. However, further evidence on the antioxidant properties of Centevita® would help better characterize its use in the prevention of ROS-induced skin conditions. In this supplement study, we evaluated the skin benefits induced by Centevita®. In total, 62 patients with skin oxidative stress were enrolled (mean age, 38±2 years; range, 35-42). Of them, 32 decided to follow the standard management plus Centevita® plan, while the remaining 30 were on standard management only. Overall, a statistical significant improvement in all parameters was observed in the Centevita® group, with respect to baseline. On the other hand, no evident improvements were observed in patients on standard management only. Although with all the limitations of any supplement study, we showed that the addition of Centevita® to a standard management based on adequate diet and hydration can help improve skin health, partly due to a reduction of oxidative stress. This finding provides further evidence on the use of Centevita® as a nutricosmetic agent for the preservation of skin health.
