The advent of the so-called biologics in psoriasis care and treatment has brought with it a spate of clinical recommendations, often issued by dermatological associations and scientific societies and sometimes questionable as regards their transparency and the methodologies behind them. This article gives a brief overview of the principal guidelines on psoriasis treatment available in the literature published up to 31 May 2010, excluding guidelines on psoriatic arthritis. The guidelines published in 2009 provide a necessary starting point for dermatologists involved in the care of psoriasis patients, at least in Europe; nevertheless, the documents need to be read with a critical eye and integrated with recent updates or information obtained directly from primary sources when available. The programmed agreement between the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and the Association of Italian Hospital Dermatologists will ensure for the development of specific guidelines for Italy within the next few months.
