Tacalcitol ointment in the treatment of psoriasis

Aim. Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Vitamin D3 analogues in the topical treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of tacalcitol in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris.
Methods. In this open-label study, 50 patients (28 males and 22 females) presenting with plaque psoriasis, scalp psoriasis, flexural psoriasis and facial psoriasis have been treated with tacalcitol ointment (4 µg/g). The drug was applied once daily over an 8 week period.
Results. Upon completion of the treatment, a marked decrease was noted in the sum score for symptoms such as erythema, infiltration and scaling. Tolerability was noted to be excellent or good in up to 94% of patients.
Conclusion. The results obtained demonstrate that tacalcitol ointment is an effective treatment for all forms of psoriasis vulgaris.
