Pharmacogenetics and dermatology
Lee E. E., Maibach H. I.
From the Department of Dermatology University of California, School of Medicine, San Francisco, CA, USA
Pharmacogenetics is the study of genetically determined variations in response to drugs in humans or in laboratory organisms. Within the past decade, many advances have been made in understanding pharmacogenetics and dermatology. These range from the enzymes that metabolize dapsone and azathioprine to the numerous drug interactions that are enzyme based occurring with other immunosuppresants, antihistamines, antifungals, and antibiotics. Dermatology, with its numerous drug therapies, will certainly encounter this entity as it researches and develops its pharmacologic arsenal.
