BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of incidental gallbladder cancer in cholecystectomy material and retrospective analysis of 3519 cholecystectomy cases in the pathology department in our hospital between 2001-2017 years. Incidental gallbladder cancer is defined as cancer of the gallbladder suspected for the first time during cholecystectomy or accidentally found on histological examination of gallbladder. Incidental gallbladder cancer occurs in 0.19-2.8% of patients after cholecystectomy in the literature.
METHODS: In our study, retrospective analysis of 3519 cholecystectomy cases was investigated between 2001-2017 years. The patients were classified according to age and gender.
RESULTS: Thirty-six gallbladder cancers were encountered in 3519 cholecystectomy cases. 21 of them were mass lesions that clinical and radiologically with malignant suspicion. There were 15 cases of incidental adenocarcinomas diagnosed histopathologically, which were sent to the pathology laboratory with a preliminary diagnosis of cholelithiasis or cholecystitis, which did not constitute a distinct mass in the lumen and did not suspicion of malignancy clinically.
CONCLUSIONS: It was emphasized that careful macroscopic and histopathological examination of cholecystectomy materials and multiple sampling from irregular mucosal parts in the pathology laboratory will increase the diagnostic efficiency of incidental gallbladder cancer.
