Mini-pterional-orbital approach with lateral orbitotomy for surgical resection of giant orbital hemangioma

Lateral orbitotomy, a more straightforward and less-invasive method than the transcranial approach, is primarily used for intraorbital and retrobulbar lesion surgeries. Minimally invasive pterional-orbital approaches can be associated with lateral orbitotomy, for wide retrobulbar lesions that cannot be reached through common access. The authors provide a technical element to surgical removing wide retrobulbar lesions, respecting a functional and cosmetic outcome. Total removal of retrobulbar lesion, absence of neurological deficit or enophtalmo/ propotsosis. No visual worsening or ocular movement impairment occurred. The mini-pterional-orbital approach with lateral orbitotomy causes less tissue damage; provides control of the surgical area, and allows for complete lesion removal, as well as restoration of orbital anatomy.
