Hyaluronic acid: our experience in postoperatory treatment of septoplasty

AIM:Evidence has recently accumulated showing that hyaluronic acid serves important biological roles beyond its generally accepted function as a structural component of interstitial and connective tissues. The aim of this study was to determine the early effect of exogenous hyaluronic acid in restoring the normal mucociliary clearance and sensibility after septoplasty. We have also evaluated in all patients the changes in mucous cicatrization using this product.
METHODS: Sixty patients with septal deviation underwent a standard septoplasty in general anesthesia; 30 patients were treated with hyaluronic acid and 30 patients were treated with 0.9% NaCl solution. Three weeks after surgical procedure, a questionnaire was compiled, evaluating patient adherence to therapy and subjective symptoms related to surgery.
RESULTS:Two weeks after the questionnaire compilation, mucociliary clearance was assessed by performing a saccharin test.
CONCLUSION:Our preliminary results suggest that hyaluronic acid treatment can promote a faster restoring of normal mucociliary clearance and sensibility after septoplasty.
