On-pump coronary artery bypass grafting in chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura
Ashida R., Sarkar P.
Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Northern General Hospital Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Sheffield, UK
An increasing number of coronary artery bypass grafting operations are performed on elderly patients. The average age of patients is rising by one year every year, consequently comorbidities such as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) are more frequent. We present two cases with chronic ITP which successfully underwent on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting operations with the use of aprotinin. These cases showed that this method an acceptable alternative to the off-pump technique with the use of immunoglobulins.
