Sub-total colectomy with cecorectal-anastomosis vs total colectomy with ileorectal-anastomosis. Indications and advantages

Background. Personal experience on 15 cases submitted to subtotal colectomy and cecorectal anastomosis and on 15 cases submitted to total colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis, is reported.
Methods. The possible indications and advantages of subtotal colectomy and cecorectal anastomosis, are presented and the results are compared with those obtained with colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis.
Results. The very good results obtained in the 15 patients submitted to subtotal colectomy and cecorectal anastomosis encourage the authors to widen their experience on this particular technique.
Conclusions. This surgical procedure, assuming the right indications have been identified, marker it possible to preserve the cecum and ileocecal valve, whose metabolic and functional importance are well-known.
