Leiomyoma of the oesophagus

De Medici A., Venegoni A., Torello Viera F.

PDF

A case of esophageal leiomyoma observed at the Departement of Surgery II, San Matteo Polyclinic, IRCCS, Pavia, Italy, is reported. Leiomyoma is the commonest benign tumor of esophagus although its occurrence is fairly uncommon. The typical pathological pictures and the great impact of endoscopic ultrasonography in confirming the diagnosis of esophageal leiomyoma are described. The diagnostic problems and differential diagnosis are underlined and the conservative surgical treatment, particularly the enucleation, is suggested as the treatment of chioce.
