Continuous single-layer suture with absorbable monofilament in intestinal anastomosis

The single-layer continuous suture is not generally very used for intestinal anastomosis; in the present paper personal experience with this technique is reported. All intestinal anastomoses performed in our Department in a 4-year period are studied: 543 anastomoses were performed (no.=543) 393 of them with a continuous single-layer technique; in this group the rate of clinical leakage was 1.3% and early or late strictures have never been observed. The conclusion is drawn that the single-layer continuous suture with an absorbable monofilament is a sate, quick and simple technique, easily learned and low expensive and it is possible to perform it in most cases of intestinal anastomoses.
