The ankle joint is subject to symptomatic arthritis at a much lower rate than the other major weight-bearing joints in the lower extremity. When degenerative changes do occur, they are most commonly secondary to trauma, chronic ankle misalignment, ankle instability, inflammatory conditions, infection, recurrent hemarthosis, neuropathic and neoplastic conditions, talar osteonecrosis that is a contraindication to the ankle prosthesis.
