Indications for arthrodesis of the calcaneo-cuboid joint

During preparation for a presentation of the subject at an update on foot surgery, a search for published studies and case reviews retrieved extremely few works from the international databases, especially as regarded indications for arthrodesis of the calcaneocuboid joint. Given that reference could not be made to cases in which the procedure was performed in double arthrodesis of the subtalar joint and Chopart’s joint and in which the need to combine arthrodesis of the calcaneocuboid joint almost never arises from a pathology of the joint itself, the search turned to the archives of the Centro Chirurgia del Piede Prof. G. Pisani, where suitable documentation was found. The documentation comprises 15 cases in which arthrodesis of the calcaneocuboid joint was carried out: 9 in combination with arthrodesis of the talocalcaneal joint and 6 of the calcaneocuboid joint alone. Except for 4 cases of arthrodesis of the calcaneocuboid joint for symptomatic joint pain of unclassifiable origin, nearly all of the remaining cases refer to posttraumatic arthropathy with fractures involving the articular surfaces of the joint.
