Surgical treatment of idiopathic flatfoot in infancy using Giannini’s technique
Specchiulli F., Gramazio M.
Based on the series of patients treated by the Orthopedic Clinics at Bari University, the authors examine the results obtained in the treatment of infantile flatfoot using Giannini's technique. Thirty-two patients were operated, with a total of 59 flatfeet, and controlled an average of 3 years after surgery. The results were analysed using the evaluation protocol elaborated by the national study group for Giannini's technique. This protocol allows a morphological and functional evaluation and a radiographic evaluation to be made of the deformity. A number of peculiar aspects of the technique are discussed, including the size of orthesis, additional surgical procedures, insertion removal times, complications. The good results obtained (results were excellent in approximately 70% of cases), the simplicity of the method and the stability of the outcome over time make Giannini's technique of arthroereisis the most rational alternative to other methods of treatment.
