New scale for the assessment of facial paralysis: ADS scale
Di Stadio A.
San Camillo Hopital, La Sapienza University, Rome, Italy
Aim: The aim of this paper was to present a new clinical rating scale for the evaluation of facial nerve paralysis.
Methods: Our study started in 2007, we analyzed 180 patients affected by facial palsy disorders, evaluated with three different scales, the House Brackmann, the May Scale and the ADS Scale. Sixty were evaluated with HB and ADS for comparison of system. Our scale introduces different concepts: district and subdivision of the face muscle, and a new method to evaluate syncinesis.
Result: The results considered easy and speedy of evaluation, the accuracy of muscle deficits and correspondence with the House Brackmann Scale. Scales were compared to assess strengths and weaknesses and a new assessment system syncinesis was created.
Conclusion: Small number of cases allows only a partial assessment, we believe that this new scale of evaluation may be a viable alternative on the other system evaluation because might associate speedy and accuracy of diagnosis and classification in the facial palsy disorders.
