Sinus graft: trephining iliac crest in local anesthesia
Sembronio S., Robiony M. *, Costa F., Polini F., Politi M. **
From the Department of Maxillo-Facial Surgery Faculty of Medicine, University of Udine, Udine, Italy
Background. The authors propose the use of trephine to harvest bone from the iliac crest to perform large sinus grafts in local anesthesia.
Methods. Ten patients underwent the surgical procedure and twelve sinus grafts were performed. Morbidity from the donor site, the amount of bone harvested and the restoration of maxillary sinus were analyzed.
Results. The results show that the incidence of morbidity was very low and the amount of bone harvested by trephine was more than sufficient to perform all the sinus grafts.
Conclusions. The procedure is simple and easy to perform and can be utilized for outpatients in day surgery. A good increase of sinus floor was obtained and the implants were inserted in the posterior maxilla.
