Data management and handling was carried out by the Polytechnic University of Marche Region together with the Wound Care Center, Ancona, operating under the Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ospedali Riuniti. The data on the prevalence of chronic skin wounds in several survey sample cities in Marche Region were collected and analyzed. The preliminary survey was designed as part of the creation and implementation of a regional register of chronic skin wounds. The duration of the study was 24 months (2007 to 2009). Analysis of the data showed the need for a regional wound care network that would comprise all aids and services necessary for ensuring the delivery of appropriate care. The development of such a network would include the identification of adequately trained caregivers and the design and implementation of shared, effective care pathways so as to shorten wound healing time and to reduce the cost of chronic wound management.
