Therapeutic notes: the role of elastic compression in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis

The principal therapeutic guidelines acknowledge the importance of elastic compression in the treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis to prevent the development of Post-thrombotic Syndrome. There is emerging evidence to support the possible efficacy of elastic compression in terms of the rate and completeness of resolution of the thrombus and this may have a positive impact on the clinical history of the pathology and on the frequency of recurrence. Initiating deambulation combined with an elastic compression therapy immediately upon first diagnosis appears to result in an early reduction of clinical symptomatology and a further reduction of haemodynamic sequelae over time.
