BACKGROUND: The present study was carried out in order to identify the modalities for approaching distal venous thrombosis, and treatment modalities employed in Italy and France are compared. For this reason a working group including French angiologists was set up and this group drafted a questionnaire for submission to specialist angiologists.
METHODS: The questionnaire consisting of 15 questions was sent by email or fax to 2000 angiologists (1200 Italian and 800 French).
RESULTS: Replies to the questionnaire were received from 362 angiologists. All agree on the fact that distal venous thrombosis should be considered an important problem but that on many occasions it is underestimated. The replies to the questionnaire threw up some interesting agreements, the results obtained being comparable to those of a similar study carried out in the U.K. and Ireland.
CONCLUSIONS: Close agreement emerged between Italian and French colleagues and most agree on the need for further associated studies.
