Chronic granular myringitis. Report of 2 cases
Ferrara S., Sammartino D.
Clinica Otorinolaringoiatrica R Università degli Studi di Palermo, Palermo
Chronic myringitis is defined as a loss of tympanic membrane epithelium for more than 1 month without disease within the tympanic cavity. The previous medical and otologic history, the nature and duration of symptoms and the treatment and our 2 clinical cases are described. Symptoms were often present for some months or years before the diagnosis of chronic myringitis, and sometimes chronic myringitis is mistaken for chronic otitis media; physical findings were various, with granulation tissue and tympanic membrane perforations often occurring transitorily. Such confusion delays an appropriate treatment and sometimes leads to needless tympanomastoid surgery.
