Chronic granular myringitis. Report of 2 cases

Chronic myrin­gitis is ­defined as a ­loss of tym­pan­ic mem­brane epi­the­li­um for ­more ­than 1 ­month with­out dis­ease with­in the tym­pan­ic cav­ity. The pre­vi­ous med­i­cal and oto­log­ic his­to­ry, the ­nature and dura­tion of symp­toms and the treat­ment and our 2 clin­i­cal cas­es are ­described. Symptoms ­were ­often ­present for ­some ­months or ­years ­before the diag­no­sis of chron­ic myrin­gitis, and some­times chron­ic myrin­gitis is mis­tak­en for chron­ic ­otitis ­media; phys­i­cal find­ings ­were var­ious, ­with gran­u­la­tion tis­sue and tym­pan­ic mem­brane per­fo­ra­tions ­often occur­ring tran­si­tor­i­ly. Such con­fu­sion ­delays an appro­pri­ate treat­ment and some­times ­leads to need­less tym­pan­o­mas­toid sur­gery.
