Background. A series of ten patients observed in the period between 1990 and 00 suffering from mucocele of the paranasal sinus, with a minimum follow-up of 1 year is reported.
Methods. Marsupialisation surgery was used intranasally under endoscopic control and only in one case with frontal localisation was a combined approach necessary.
Results. From the results obtained it is possible to state that intranasal marsupialisation in endoscopy is appropriate for bringing about a cure; in fact it is possible to state that removal of the mucocele wall is not necessary, thus reducing the risk of iatrogenous lesions especially in cases in which it is in close contact with the periorbit or with the dura mater.
Conclusions. The failure of the intranasal endoscopic approach does not prejudice the use of an external technique during the course of the same operating session or at a later stage.
