Bromo-iodine thermal Politzer and ORL diseases. An experimental-clinical study

Background. Numerous clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated the usefulness of inhalatory crenotherapy in the treatment of rhinopharyngeal inflammation with tubal-tympanic complications, which in thermal therapy are identified as rhinogenic deafness. Reports from the literature very often refer to the effectiveness of sulfur endotympanic inflation thermal treatment. However very little is known about the Politzer method using bromo-iodine mineral water in the treatment of ORL diseases commonly responsible for rhinogenic deafness in childhood or about the side effects such treatment can provoke.
Methods. 28 subjects (age range: 4-8 years) affected with chronic effusive otitis media and chronic sino-rhinal and pharyngeal inflammation underwent 12 sessions in which the Politzer method using bromo-iodine alkaline bicarbonate mineral water from Agnano Spa (Terme di Agnano) (Naples) was used.
Results. At the end of thermal treatment, increased impedance audiometric curves, corresponding to normoventilation of the tympanic membrane (type A), and diminished pathologic curves (types B and C) were observed.
Conclusions. The results suggest that in many childhood cases of tubal dysfunction the Politzer method using bromo-iodine alkaline bicarbonate mineral water can be used effectively, in addition to sulfur endotubal inflation, as has been widely demonstrated in the literature.
