Lyophilized bovine pericardium (Periguard) in the correction of nasal deformities

Background. In the last years, in the field of alloplastic and autoplastic graft in additive rhinoplasty, great interest has been focused on a collagen graft composed of lyophilised bovine pericardium (Periguard).
Methods. Our Department tested its validity as alloplastic graft on 20 patients with nasal deformity that underwent rhinoplasty.
Results. Patient’s evaluation after surgery and during follow-up showed indication to use Periguard to correct profile nasal deformities avoiding resorption and superior complications compared with autoplastic graft. However, particular attention must be reserved to avoid infections and open-roof deformity.
Conclusions. Periguard is an excellent graft for rhinoplasty due to its properties between alloplastic and autoplastic graft.
