Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: histopathological findings, clinical and features and therapeutic management
Ferri E., Cavaleri S., Ianniello F., Montaguti A.
ULSS n. 13 - Riviera del Brenta Presidio Ospedaliero - Dolo (Venezia) Unità Operativa Autonoma di Otorinolaringoiatria (Primario: Dott. F. Ianniello) *Servizio di Anatomia e Istologia Patologica (Primario: Dott. R. Giordano)
First described in 1986, basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive variant of the squamous cell carcinoma, with a particularly poor prognosis. In the upper aerodigestive tract, this tumour occurs most frequently at the base of the tongue, hypopharynx and supraglottic larynx. The differential diagnosis includes adenoid cystic carcinoma, basal-cell adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma and small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Surgery followed by radiotherapy is the treatment of choice. The Authors present a new case-report confirming the typical features of this neoplasm (laryngeal supraglottic involvment, aggressiveness and poor prognosis, biphasic histologic appearance).
