Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: histopathological findings, clinical and features and therapeutic management

First ­described in 1986, bas­al­oid squa­mous ­cell car­ci­no­ma is a ­rare, high­ly aggres­sive var­i­ant of the squa­mous ­cell car­ci­no­ma, ­with a par­tic­u­lar­ly ­poor prog­no­sis. In the ­upper aero­di­ges­tive ­tract, ­this ­tumour ­occurs ­most fre­quent­ly at the ­base of the ­tongue, hypo­phar­ynx and supra­glot­tic lar­ynx. The dif­fe­ren­tial diag­no­sis ­includes ade­noid cys­tic car­ci­no­ma, ­basal-­cell aden­o­car­cin­o­ma, ade­nos­qua­mous car­ci­no­ma, mucoe­pi­der­moid car­ci­no­ma and ­small-­cell neu­ro­en­do­crine car­ci­no­ma. Surgery fol­lowed by radio­ther­a­py is the treat­ment of ­choice. The Authors ­present a new ­case-­report con­firm­ing the typ­i­cal fea­tures of ­this neo­plasm (laryn­geal supra­glot­tic involv­ment, aggres­sive­ness and ­poor prog­no­sis, biphas­ic his­to­log­ic appear­ance).
