Background. It has been previously reported by this laboratory that the M1 and M2 muscarinic blocker, pirenzepine, in- hibits in humans transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs).
Methods. The guinea pigs have now been used to extend to this animal species the above data along with a prospective, more comprehensive and detailed pharmacological dissection of TEOAEs than allowed in the human being.
Results. Pirenzepine has shown to inhibit TEOAEs, thus extending to guinea pigs the human data.
Conclusions. The present results of an excitatory cholinergic mechanism on TEOAEs vis a vis adverse the inhibitory sympathetic one, while extending the cochlear cholinergic efferents to the sympathetic-sensory coupling programme of an ubiquitously pervasive tonic sympathetic inhibition on peripheral sensory structures.
