Background and aims. Rhinophyma represents a morbid process accompanied by an advanced manifestation of acne rosacea which is fostered by a number of associated co-factors. Depending on the macroscopic clinical conditions, a number of different classifications have been proposed, including those reported by Darier, Dufourmentel and E1-Azhary to which this study refers. Rhinophyma may be complicated by its possible evolution in a calcimatous sense.
Methods. Nine cases of rhinophyma were observed at the Institute of Plastic Surgery of Milan University between 1989 and 1996 which underwent surgery using Ollier’s decortication technique.
Results. The cosmetic results on recovery and at the 4-year follow-up were good with reference to Clark’s classification, without signs of short or long-term recidivation.
Conclusions. According to the results reported by other authors, the use of different types of laser might be advantageous in terms of reduced intraoperative bleeding, greater precision and respect for anatomic structures.
