Myringoplasty. Results of the sandwich technique by Pagnini

Background. Myringoplasty is a relatively simple operation, nevertheless there has been a number of anatomical and functional failure.
Methods. The authors present a retrospective study of the myringoplasty procedures at the ORL department of the Tricase Hospital of Lecce performed between January 1993 and December 1995, and analyse the results of these operations which were performed with the sandwich overlay technique of Pagnini with temporal grafting. During that period, following a careful selection of patients with various size and non-peripheral perforations of the “pars tensa”, with no phlogosis or cholesteatoma and no apparent interruption of the ossicular chain, twenty five operations were performed.
Results. The patients were checked after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months; a closing of the perforation in 96% of cases was noticed through otomicroscopy, in particular 68% of the neo-tympanums were normal, 24% with sclero-atrophic signs, 4% were retracted, 4% iperforated, there were no signs of blunting or lateralization. At checkups, the audiometric tests showed improvement in 92% of cases, ranging from an average pre-operation gap of 26 dB to a post operation average 12 dB.
Conclusions. These results confirm the efficacy of this technique.
