Laryngeal dysplasia. Follow-up of 380 cases
Mazzone A., Costa G., Gambardella G., Califano L., Rocereto E., Perrotta P.*
Seconda Università degli Studi - Napoli Corso di Laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia - Caserta (Direttore: Prof. A. Mazzone) * Azienda Ospedaliera Caserta Unità Operativa di ORL (Responsabile: Dott. P. Perrotta)
Methods. The authors report 380 cases of laryngeal lesions (polyps, cysts, papillomas, verrucas, leukoplakia) associated with epithelial dysplasia at various stages. These lesions were treated using cordal decortication or CO2 laser removal. The follow-up showed a renewed onset of dysplasia in 7.4% of cases and the development of secondary cancer in 5.8%. There appeared to be a linear correlation between neoplastic transformation and the stage of the dysplastic lesion.
Results. The results obtained confirm the therapeutic strategy used for this dysplastic pathology with evolutive potential.
Conclusions. It was vital to perform a thorough and accurate clinical examination in patients at two-monthly intervals for the first two years, and at least every six months for the following five years.
