Treatment of burn scars with a gel based on allantoin and sulfomucopolysaccharides

Università degli Studi - Pisa, Istituto di Clinica Dermatologica, Scuola di Specializzazione di Dermatologia e Venereologia
Aim. The pharmacological treatment of burn scars (hypertrophic-keloid scars) is difficult and often unsuccessful. The authors report their clinical impressions and instrumental results regarding the progress of scars all of which underwent elastocompression and half were treated with a gel based on allantoin and sulfomucopolysaccharide (Sameplast gel).
Methods. The study was carried out by recording the instrumental and clinical parameters at established intervals and under standardised conditions over a period of six months after tissue repair in a total of twenty patients.
Results. The results showed a satisfactory clinical improvement both in functional (reabsorption and flattening) and cosmetic terms (lighter colour of scars) and an appreciable recovery of tissue physical properties (elasticity and hydration) of the newly formed scar tissue.
Conclusions. The evolution of the clinical observations was objectively confirmed by changes in instrumental data (oxymetry-elastometry-ultrasonography).
