Accumulating evidence shows that some degree of embolization occurs during carotid artery angioplasty and stenting procedures. While the use of embolic protection devices during these transcatheter procedures makes intuitive sense, the clinical implications could not be more controversial. As advances in cerebral and cardiovascular intervention have synergistically led to the progression of these devices, we now have a wide variety to choose from. This review will provide a framework with regard to these devices, outcomes within the various trials, and various methods of application and selection.
