Endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic rupture

Open surgical management of acute rupture of the descending thoracic aorta is associated with high mortality and morbidity. Recently, published reports of decreased mortality associated with endovascular device implantation for the treatment of acute rupture of the descending thoracic aorta have highlighted its potential advantage in emergency situations. The purpose of this short review is to detail published experience with covered stents in this setting to determine the limitations of this technique and clarify its indications.
