INTRODUCTION: The aim of this paper is to systematically review the international literature regarding new and innovative treatments for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Three co-authors independently searched five databases (including PubMed/MEDLINE).
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: The co-authors screened over 800 articles and identified a total of eight major categories for new and innovative treatment options for OSA. Treatment options include positive airway pressure devices, oral appliances, nasal appliances/devices, positional therapy devices/equipment, surgical devices and operating room equipment (e.g. transoral robotic surgery, electrical stimulation), drug therapies and magnetic devices.
CONCLUSIONS: Current literature demonstrates that there are at least eight major categories for new and innovative treatment options for OSA. Additional research is recommended, as there is currently no universal cure.
