Reconstruction of the trachea

Volmerig J., Hecker E.

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Thoraxzentrum Ruhrgebiet EvK Herne, Academic Hospital University Duisburg‑Essen, Herne, Germany

Surgery of the trachea is a specialized field in which many disciplines work jointly due to the variety of indications and the extended topography. Not only because of its particular vital importance, but also because of its complex morphology, anatomy and physiology, this organ represents a special therapeutic challenge. A variety of diseases require surgical procedures of the trachea ‑ both the disease itself as well as patient-dependent parameters influence the therapeutic strategy. Regardless of the nature of the underlying disorder, it requires high expertise in airway management, a careful diagnosis and interventional planning as well as an experienced surgical technique with mastery of extended operative techniques to achieve good results. Overall, a multidisciplinary assessment of interventional pulmonologists and diagnosis-dependent operational thoracic surgeons and/or visceral surgeons, ENT surgeons and anesthesiologists is required.
