FULL TEXT

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an established surgical option for the treatment of arthritis in one or two compartments of the knee both in young and elderly patients. In the present paper we aim to discuss the epidemiology and survival of UKA by national joint registries, the possibility to combine two UKAs (bicompartmental knee arthroplasty), and the influence of this surgery in the development of the fast-track knee arthroplasty rehabilitation model. In well-selected patients expert surgeon can treat arthritis of two knee compartments with a modular bicompartmental prosthesis; the procedure yields excellent outcome but the surgical technique is demanding. Finally UKA is the best option for fast-track concept, because is a tissue-sparing surgery and allows fast postoperative recovery.
