Inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and producing flavonoids from endophytic fungi associated with Scutellaria baicalensis

AIM: The aim of this paper was to investigate the flavonoid-producing endophytic fungi from 102 strains from S. baicalensis and to evaluate their antimicrobial activities.
METHODS: Isolation of endophytic fungi was adopted by the tissue method and fungal identification were based on their rDNA-ITS sequences. Abilities of fungi to synthesizing baicalin, baicalein, or wogonin was used the technologies of thin-layer chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography and the agar well diffusion method was used to evaluate their ability to inhibit microbe growth.
RESULTS: It was found that four fungi, C.SBA7, C.SBO7, C.SBA4, and N.SBA11 belong to Fusarium sp., Phoma sp., Alternaria sp., and Fusarium sp., respectively, based on their internal transcribed spacer region r-DNA sequences, have the ability to synthesize baicalin, baicalein, or wogonin associated with S. baicalensis. All of them showed anti-microbial activities against at least one pathogenic microorganism in test.
CONCLUSION: This study has provided a strategy for producing baicalin, baicalein, or wogonin which were originally produced from S. baicalensis in a sustainable way by using the fungal fermentation, and also provided the biological data for the four fungi.
