MEDICINAL PLANTS FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOMEDICINE

Aim. Extracts were prepared from 3 medicinal plants native to Bangladesh: Hemidesmus indicus, Paederia foetida, and Shorea robusta.
Methods. These extracts were evaluated for antiviral activity against 38 strains of herpes simplex virus (HSV): 18 strains (7 HSV-1 and 11 HSV-2) were resistant to acyclovir (ACV-R) and 20 strains (10 HSV-1 and 10 HSV-2) were susceptible to ACV (ACV-S).
Results. The IC50 of each extract for the 7 ACV-R strains of HSV-1 was as follows: H. indicus, 200 µg/mL; P. foetida, 400 µg/mL; and S. robusta, 10 µg/mL. The median IC50 of the extracts for the 11 ACV-R strains of HSV-2 were: H. indicus, 200 µg/mL; P. foetida, 200 mg/mL; and S. robusta, 5.0 µg/mL. For the ACV-S strains of HSV-1 the IC50 were 400, 800, and 20, respectively, and for the HSV-2 ACV-S strains, the IC50 values were 100, 200, and 10, respectively. The cytotoxicity of the 4 herbal extracts was: H. indicus, 8000; P. foetida, 8000; and S. robusta, 2000 µg/mL in this assay.
Conclusion. Although the active component(s) in the extracts responsible for anti-HSV activity have not been identified, all the three extracts have good antiviral activity against both ACV-R and ACV-S strains of HSV-1 and HSV-2 by inhibiting the binding of HSV to cellular receptors.
