The anal­y­sis of DNA ­requires fast­er and ­more sen­si­tive tech­niques. Sev­er­al meth­ods ­have ­been pro­posed to ­increase the ­speed of hybrid­iza­tion, the bio­mo­lec­u­lar rec­og­ni­tion pro­cess ­which ­allows for the detec­tion of DNA ­sequence com­ple­men­tar­ity ­which ­form the ­basis for ­many ana­lyt­i­cal tech­niques. ­Among oth­er pos­sibil­ities we ­chose to real­ise a ­matrix of sep­ar­ate­ly driv­en elec­trodes, ded­i­cat­ed to bio­log­i­cal anal­y­sis. The elec­trodes com­pos­ing the ­array can be sin­gu­lar­ly load­ed ­with DNA ­probes by chem­i­cal attach­ment to ­gold. ­After the ana­lyte (a sam­ple con­tain­ing a mix­ture of DNA dis­solved in a buf­fer) is ­layered on the elec­trodes, an ­electric cur­rent is ­applied, caus­ing the DNA sam­ple to ­move ­toward pos­i­tive­ly ­charged ­spots. ­This great­ly ­increase the ­local con­cen­tra­tion of DNA mole­cules ­close to the ­probes, ­thus improv­ing the kinet­ics of sam­ple/­probe rec­og­ni­tion and the ­yield in DNA ­duplex.
