Influence of ­plant com­po­nents on the deg­ra­da­tion of 4-nitro­phen­ol by a bac­te­ri­al con­sor­tium iso­lat­ed ­from the rhiz­o­sphere of Phragmites aus­tra­lis

The aim of ­this ­work was to eval­u­ate the influ­ence of exter­nal param­e­ters on the deg­ra­da­tion of 4-nitro­phen­ol (4-NP) by a bac­te­ri­al con­sor­tium. The bac­te­ri­al con­sor­tium, iso­lat­ed by enrich­ment ­from the rhiz­o­sphere of Phragmites aus­tra­lis, was ­capable of util­is­ing 4-NP as the ­sole car­bon, and ener­gy ­source. Degrada­tion was stud­ied ­under dif­fer­ent con­di­tions ­using rest­ing ­cells. Among ­those, the influ­ence of ascor­bic ­acid and of ­plant ­extract ­obtained ­from P. aus­tra­lis was stud­ied. Biodegradation of 4-NP was ­enhanced in the pres­ence of ­these com­po­nents. This ­work is ­part of a wid­er ­study on the use of phy­to-micro­bi­al com­plex­es to atten­u­ate ­soil and ­water pol­lu­tion.
