The char­ac­ter­iza­tion meth­ods ­used to ­describe ­basic cap­sule prop­er­ties ­such as the perme­abil­ity and stabil­ity are sum­mar­ized, ­with a ­focus on the pro­ce­dures and met­rics uti­lized for the deter­mi­na­tion of perme­abil­ity and mem­brane cut-off. The advan­tag­es and lim­i­ta­tions of the char­ac­ter­iza­tion meth­ods are ­also dis­cussed. Methods for the deter­mi­na­tion of the mechan­i­cal stabil­ity are giv­en ­along ­with ana­lyt­i­cal meth­ods for deter­mi­na­tion of sur­face prop­er­ties as mor­phol­o­gy. Some gen­er­al ­items relat­ed to cap­sule char­ac­ter­iza­tion, ­such as ­batch homo­ge­ne­ity, are men­tioned.
